Andy Pagés: “I prepared all season for this moment.”

Pinar del Río native Andy Pagés was the hero of Game 3 of the Division Series, delivering a bases-loaded hit to put the Los Angeles Dodgers ahead of the Atlanta Braves and send them to the National League Championship Series. Once again, he delivered in a crucial moment, something that has become a familiar part of his career.

Pagés went 2-for-3 with two singles, raising his batting average to .286 and showing that he is back to full strength following his injury. The Cuban outfielder is a key contributor both offensively and defensively for the team led by the controversial Dave Roberts.

Now, the Dodgers await Sunday’s start of the National League Championship Series against the Milwaukee Brewers, who had the best record during the regular season. It will be a difficult series, and in the opener they will have to face Jacob Misiorowski, currently one of the best pitchers in Major League Baseball.

Interview with Andy Pagés

Andy, can you describe that at-bat? Bases loaded, two outs, a 3–2 count—is that something you dream about as a kid?

I’ve been preparing throughout the series for a moment like that—to give myself an opportunity and get a good pitch to hit. Fortunately, I was able to put a good swing on a pitch.

When you get that hit, what is that moment like? You’re standing at first base, the dugout is going crazy. What is that moment like for you?

Obviously, it’s a very exciting moment. I was very happy for the team. But honestly, all I had in mind was putting the team ahead and putting pressure on them. Our bullpen and our pitching staff were able to get the job done and secure this victory.

I know all of you understand the ultimate goal. But watching you celebrate and celebrate one another—I know it never gets old—how do you continue to enjoy the moment while knowing that the ultimate goal is to win the championship?

Just enjoy the moment. Obviously, we have great teams and big series ahead of us. We’re going to face tough teams, so we have to prepare for those moments, but also appreciate the opportunity to be here and enjoy these moments. We know our ultimate goal is to win the World Series, so we have to stay focused on that.
