JD Martinez Adds Power to New York Mets Lineup with One-Year, $12 Million Contract

In a move that could significantly bolster the New York Mets’ offensive lineup, JD Martinez has inked a one-year, $12 million deal with the team, pending a physical. The agreement, which includes deferred payments, will see Martinez earn $4.5 million for the upcoming season, with the remainder spread from 2034-38, for $1.5 million annually.

Martinez’s signing directly addresses a longstanding concern for the Mets: providing protection for star hitter Pete Alonso. As Alonso enters his sixth year with the team, he has often lacked a consistent offensive counterpart in the lineup. With Martinez’s arrival, the Mets aim to solve this issue and build a stronger offensive lineup.

Last season, Martinez had his most prolific home run hitting campaign since 2019, with 33 homers. As a full time DH with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Martinez hit .271/.321/.572, with a .893 OPS. He was also selected to his third consecutive All-Star Game.

With Martinez’s signing, the Mets aim to solidify their offensive lineup. Teaming up with Alonso, Martinez brings offensive firepower to the Mets’ roster. His ability to provide protection for Alonso could prove pivotal in the team’s success in the upcoming season.
