Lorenzo Curbelo: “My goal for the year is to play with a professional team.”

Lorenzo Curbelo is a very interesting prospect that has flown under the radar. The shortstop has drawn the interest of a few Nippon League teams. Curbelo has plenty of interesting tools. While in Cuba he was a member of the Sub-15 national team and saw action in the 2019 Pan American Cup for a team that finished fourth in the tournament.

Curbelo played in the U-12, 13-14, U-15 and U-18 tournament on the island. During the 2022 National Youth Championship the infielder was 3rd among hitters with an average of .380, 7th in runs scored (24), and co-leader in doubles with nine. He was also 2nd in slugging (.577) and 3rd in OPS (1.053). Curbelo also led the Elefantes in runs scored, hits, average, OBP, doubles, total bases, slugging and OPS, while also finishing as the team’s co-leader in HR (1). In 35 games last season he hit .351 with a homer, 27 runs batted in, 14 stolen bases and slashed .461/.535/.996 Expect the talented player to see action in a professional league in the near future.

Tell me a little about the preparation you’ve done for your showcases in the future.

All my training has gone well. I spent three months in the Dominican Republic preparing to exhibit my talents during my future showcases. My preparation has gone well and I feel ready.

You played college baseball at Susssex County CC. Compare that level to the one you played in Cuba, both in the juvenil and in the Sub-18 levels.

Yes, the level of the collage was a little more demanding because they are plenty pitchers that throw above 90 mph and the competition is greater. Also the fact that in Cuba you are at home, but here we are away from home and have to look good. You can’t fall because you lose the rhythm, but as I repeat : the collage level is more demanding and talented than that of Cuba’s.

Do you have any goals for the remainder of this year?

My goal for the year is to play with a professional team, preferably in the near future. Having the possibility of playing professionally and in the winter is my only goal for the year.

Speaking of which, do you have any offers to play in the winter?

Yes, I want to play in the winter and it is in the works, hopefully we will be having some good news soon.
