The Chicago White Sox have called up Cuban catcher Edgar Quero to the Major Leagues, according to a statement released by colleague Francys Romero on his personal social media profiles yesterday. It was expected news, as many believe the Cuban will be the franchise’s starting catcher for a long time. At the time of his call-up he was hitting .333 with a homer and four runs batted in at Charlotte (AAA).
The 22-year-old is expected to join the active roster on Thursday in Chicago. “Quero is ranked 62nd in baseball, according to MLB Pipeline,” Francys posted on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter. Quero will become the 24th Cuban to see action in the Major Leagues in 2025 and the 15th Cuban position player to play in the big leagues this year. He is currently ranked as the sixth-best prospect in the White Sox’s farm system, 62nd in all of MLB, and ninth among catchers.
Quero undoubtedly has the talent to dominate the best baseball in the world. When he debuts, he will become the 395th Cuban to step onto a major league diamond. Within the organization from the southside of the Windy City, he will be the 27th Cuban to wear the jersey, with Miguel Vargas being the last to debut with the pale holes in mid-2024. The first Cuban to debut with the sox team was the outstanding Negro League pitcher José “Acostica” Acosta in the 1922 season.
Plenty of Cuban baseball stars have come after him, such as Hall of Famer Orestes “Minnie” Miñoso, Orlando “El Duque” Hernández, José Ariel Contreras, Alexei Ramírez, and José Abreu. Quero follows the legacy left at catcher by Yasmani Grandal, who starred with the team earlier this decade. He becomes the 16th Cuban to play in the Major Leagues with the squad this decade.
