Maikel Serrano: “It would be a pleasure to represent Nicaragua in the World Baseball Classic. “

Although he hasn’t seen much action this season, Maikel Serrano could still be a very valuable piece to the Saraperos del Saltillo lineup based on his vast experience in the league. In 18 at-bats this campaign he’s hitting .250 with four runs batted in.

Serrano was a key bat this past winter for the LBPN runner-up Tren del Norte’s attack. In 48 games the outfielder slashed .348/.440/.464/.904 with two longballs and 29 runs batted in during the league’s regular season and playoffs combined.

This is the fifth season for the slugger in Mexico after being traded from Jalisco to Saltillo in the offseason, after a three-year stay with the Olmecas de Tabasco and one with the Charros. During  his four seasons in the LMB, Serrano saw action has in a total of 248 games.

In 846 at-bats he has smacked 262 hits (53 doubles, eight triples and 22 home runs) for and hits .310 over that span. He has also knocked in a total of 131 runs, scored 126 and slashed .383/.508/.891. As the season progresses expect Serrano to play a bigger role for Saltillo.

This is your third team in the LMB. How have you adjusted to the Saraperos de Saltillo been?

First, thank you for the interview. You know, I’m with a new club, new management , and  I’m trying to adapt to the Saraperos’ system. I’m working every day to stay ready.

You’ve been in the league for several years now. What has your approach been like playing for so long in a league where rosters are constantly changing?

Discipline. Discipline is everything. Working every day focused on what my job is and trying to give my all on the field every time I go out to play.

Speaking of focus, this year you haven’t had all the at-bats you’d like. How has that approach been to be available when the manager needs you?

It’s all about the mindset. Mentally, being ready and prepared as if I were playing. Going through your daily routine and trying to be available when your manager needs you to give your best.

You were in Nicaragua in the winter. Tell me about that league, tell me about your experience in Nicaragua.

I really liked it. It was my first year, and I truly had a great experience there, playing at a good level. I’m grateful to Nicaragua and the Tren del Norte for giving me the opportunity. We hope to return again.

Continuing on the topic of Nicaragua, you’re in the process of becoming a naturalized player. Is there a possibility of seeing you with Nicaragua in the World Baseball Classic

We’re working on it. Yes, I would, and it would be a pleasure for Nicaragua to accept me as one of them. We’re in the process, talking to see if we can get the paperwork done.

Are you returning to Nicaragua this winter?

Hopefully, God willing.

Any personal goals for this summer season in the Mexican league?

Staying healthy first and foremost, and God willing, they’ll give me the opportunity to showcase my talent on the field and go out and play and give it my all.
