Although he was not the pitcher of record in his season debut Johan Oviedo tossed an inning in which he gave up two hits, two earned runs, walked three and also struck out three during Pittsburgh’s 5-4 win over the San Francisco Giants. For the Cuban right-hander it was his first action since September of 2023.
His taking of the mound now sets the mark at 32 Cubans that have seen action on the season, one player short of tying the mark set in 2022 and 2024. The hurler from Havana has spent nearly a year-and-a-half recovering from Tommy John surgery. During his rehabilitation starts in the minors the righty posted 1-2 record and 3.12 earned run average in six starts from Rookie ball to Triple-A.
Over his five year career in the big leagues with St. Louis and Pittsburgh he has a 13-25 mark with a 4.36 earned run average and has fanned 282 batters in 312⅔ innings of work. Over that span he sports a 1.41 WHIP and opponents hit a middling .240 against the hard-throwing Cuban.
