One of the key pieces to a Seattle Mariners’ victory in Game 5 of the Division Series against the Detroit Tigers will be Randy Arozarena, who already knows what it’s like to shine in these types of postseason situations. His contribution will be key against one of the best pitchers in the Major Leagues.
Before the decisive game, the Arroyo de Mantua, Cuba native spoke with the local press in Seattle about what could happen against the Tigers. There, he also offered his perspective on the elimination games and emphasized that focus will be key to deciphering Tarik Skubal’s pitches.
In the postseason the outfielder hits .321 with 11 homeruns and 18 runs batted in over 131 at-bats. He also holds playoff records for hits (29), homeruns (10) and toal bases (64) in a single postseason, which were all set during the 2020 playoffs.
Randy, this isn’t your first playoff game where you have to win or go home. In Game 5 of 2020 against the Yankees and Game 7 against the Astros, what did you learn from those games and how can you apply that to tonight’s game?
Yes. First of all, good afternoon, everyone. Well, if you’re playing an elimination game, where the loser goes home, it’s probably the most important game of the season. But you also have to remember that it’s still baseball. You have to enjoy it. I have to remain the same player I’ve been all season, enjoy the game and my teammates. Once the game starts, you have to analyze how it unfolds: if it’s going to be a close game or not. But the main thing is to go out and enjoy the moment, alongside my teammates.
Tarik Skubal is a great pitcher, but you’ve already proven you can beat him. What’s the key to success against him?
Yes, he’s a great pitcher, that’s no secret. He won the Cy Young Award. But I think the important thing for us is to stick to our plan and go out and execute it. Not try to do too much or try to swing at his best pitches. We have to take advantage of any pitches he leaves in the zone and look for good at-bats, because we all know he’s one of the best.
Randy, what does it mean to be back at home for Game 5?
It means a lot. This Game 5 reflects how close the series has been, back and forth. But yes, returning home means a lot. The fans are incredible; they cheer us on and give us an extra boost. As a team, we just have to go out and give our all, play with intensity, and give the crowd something to be excited about. Hopefully, we can come away with a win at the end of the game.
How important is communication in the dugout between hitters during a game like this? Do they share information about what they’re seeing?
Yes, it’s very important. We have constant communication. Every little detail counts, especially when you’re facing a pitcher of Skubal’s caliber. We’re always talking to each other, exchanging observations, and keeping the energy going in the dugout. That energy keeps us focused and has helped us win. So we’ll do everything we can to keep that momentum going.
