Johan Oviedo is traded to the Red Sox.

Johan Oviedo has a new team in MLB, the Boston Red Sox acquired the Cuban right-handed pitcher in a five-player trade between Boston and Pittsburgh. Oviedo adds another power arm to a young but talented that also includes Bryan Bello and Garrett Crochet.

The full trade:

The Red Sox receive:

• RHP Johan Oviedo

• LHP Tyler Samaniego

• C Adonys Guzmán

The Pirates receive:

• OF Jhostynxon García

• RHP Jesús Travieso

For Oviedo, this trade is a great opportunity. Boston needs arms, depth, and youth in its rotation and the Cuban fits perfectly into that plan. His skills, experience, and potential make him a very interesting piece for the Red Sox. Equipped with a triple digit fastball and an array of breaking pitches the Cuban flamethrower has the ability to be top three starter in beantown.

Late last season Oviedo came off Tommy John surgery and impressed. In nine starts he posted a record of 2-1, 3.57 earned run average and struck out 42. In 40⅓ innings pitched he also had a 1.21 WHIP and opponents hit a paltry. 182 against the right-hander from Havana.
