Victor Mesa Jr went yard for the first time on the season during his first of five trips to the plate in his season debut with the Tampa Bay Rays. The Cuban outfielder also scored a run on the day, but the Floridians still fell to the Baltimore Orioles 9-7. The youngest of the Mesa clan was hitting a robust .350 in the minors prior to his call-up to the big leagues.
Andy Pagés collected two hits in four trips to the plate, including a seventh inning run-scoring single to help secure a Dodgers’ 5-3 victory over the Colorado Rockies. The outfielder from Pinar del Río, Cuba is now tied for the league lead in runs batted in with 46.
Yordan Álvarez swatted his 16th homer of the season, a fourth inning solo-shot and also drove in a run via a first inning sacrifice fly to lead the Houston Astros during their 9-0 no-hitter of the Texas Rangers. The Cuban slugger saw his average ascend to .301 and has now knocked in 33 runs on the campaign.
Randy Arozarena banged out three hits in five at-bats, including a two-run homerun and a double that knocked in a run in the third inning to do his part in Seattle’s 9-2 thrashing of the Athletics. The diminutive but powerful outfielder also scored twice on the evening and is now hitting .358 over his last 15 games.
