Two players od Cuban descent will see action in the upcoming MLB Futures Game, scheduled to be played on Sunday, July 12th at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The two players are Astros outfielder Kevin Álvarez and Yankees infielder George Lombard Jr.
Kevin Álvarez, the No. 3 prospect according to Pelota Cubana USA, is currently playing at the Single-A level and, at just 18 years old, has emerged as one of the Houston Astros‘ top prospects, earning an invitation to this prestigious showcase. This season, he has appeared in 55 games and is hitting .266 (59-for-222) with 16 doubles, two triples, six home runs, 30 RBIs, eight stolen bases, and a .759 OPS.
In the case of Lombard, the 21-year-old infielder has enjoyed a strong season between Double-A and Triple-A, showcasing his elite defense, speed, and all-around offensive tools that have kept him among baseball’s most highly regarded prospects. The son of former Major Leaguer George Lombard Sr., is slashing .258/.387/.446/. 883 with eight homeruns, 25 runs batted in and 12 stolen bases in 62 games this season.
