Cuban outfielder Kevin Álvarez saw action as a defensive replacement in the late innings of the 2026 Futures Game, held at Citizens Bank Park, home of the Philadelphia Phillies.
Álvarez, the Houston Astros’ top prospect, entered the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. In his only plate appearance, he was hit by a pitch, advanced to second base on a wild pitch, and later scored a run.
In 63 games this season at Low-A, Álvarez is slashing .267/.329/.438 with a .767 OPS, seven home runs, 36 RBIs, 11 stolen bases, and a 105 wRC+. He also ranks No. 3 in Pelota Cubana USA’s Top 30 prospect rankings.
Before the Futures Game, Pelota Cubana USA spoke with Kevin Álvarez. The American League defeated the National League by a score of 6-1.
Well, we’re here with Kevin Álvarez, the Houston Astros’ No. 1 prospect. Kevin, how does it feel representing the Astros organization and also the Cuban community in this game?
It feels really good. It feels really good to be here representing the team and my people.
Talk a little bit about your season so far. It’s been a pretty good one. How would you evaluate it up to this point?
I think it’s gone well. You know, there have been some ups and downs, but that’s what baseball is all about. You have to know how to handle those moments, and I feel like things have gone pretty well for me, honestly.
What do you hope to take away from this Futures Game experience?
Just to have fun. It’s my first All-Star event here in the United States. It’s been a beautiful experience. Everything has been amazing. It’s my first time in a Major League stadium, so it’s been really special.
How does it feel to be here in this ballpark? You mentioned it’s your first time in a Major League stadium. You’d seen them on TV before, but now you have the chance to actually play in one. What’s that experience been like for you?
Honestly, I was in shock. When I walked out onto the field and saw how huge the stadium was and looked at the stands, it was unbelievable. It’s something you dream about as a kid, and thank God I’ve been given the privilege of being here today.
