Cuban prospect Kevin Álvarez, one of the top prospects Houston Astros organization is wrapping up his debut season at the Single-A level with an impressive performance. The Matanzas native, who is just 18 years old, has made a major impact during the 2026 campaign.
After signing with the Astros in January 2025 for a million-dollar bonus, the Matanzas, Cuba native began his professional career in the Dominican Summer League. The DSL is the first professional circuit where many Latin American prospects signed by MLB organizations begin their careers. In Álvarez’s case, he enjoyed a strong debut there, performing well enough to earn a promotion to Single-A the following season.
His 2025 numbers reflected the talent and ability of the talented Antillean as he adjusted to this new stage of his career. He posted a .301 batting average with 47 hits in 156 official at-bats. His power at the plate was evident in his extra-base production, as he belted 12 doubles, three triples and two home runs. He also drove in 33 runs and scored 31 times.
When the Cuban slugger promoted to the Single-A level, the Fayetteville Woodpeckers gave him the opportunity to continue his development and Álvarez did not need much time to continue his excellent production and quickly began showing his ability. After going hitless in four at-bats during his first game, Kevin returned to the field the following day and collected four hits in five at-bats, including a double. He drove in two runs and also scored twice.
He continued producing throughout the rest of the season, leaving his mark in game after game and reaffirming why he is considered the No. 3 prospect by Pelota Cubana USA in their top 30 Cuban prospects in minor league baseball. During the 2026 regular season, Álvarez has posted a .261 batting average in 99 games with the Astros’ farm team.
The young outfielder has swatted 40 extra-base hits during this stretch, including 26 doubles, three triples and 11 home runs. He has driven in 44 runs and scored 69 times. Álvarez has also stolen 17 bases while posting a .343 on-base percentage. Meanwhile, his Fayetteville Woodpeckers will face the Fredericksburg Nationals, an affiliate of the Washington Nationals, in the Divisional Series. Álvarez will have another opportunity to continue standing out and contribute to his team’s goals during the opening stage of the postseason.
