The Baltimore Orioles have claimed Luis Robert Jr off waivers from the New York Mets. The team will now assume the remaining $3.2 million of his salary for the 2026 season. The Cuban outfielder’s contract also includes a $2 million buyout on his $20 million club option for next season, meaning he has just over $5 million in guaranteed money remaining with his new team.
In a season marred by injuries the native of Ciego de Ávila, Cuba has slashed .223/.303/.399/.702 with 10 homeruns, 23 runs batted in and two stolen bases in 193 at-bats on the campaign. The Orioles will be Robert Jr.’s third MLB organization after also playing for the Chicago White Sox and New York Mets. Robert Jr. will become the 24th Cuban player to play for the Baltimore Orioles in Major League Baseball, and the 13th this century.
The first Cuban player to wear a Baltimore uniform was Armando Marsans in 1916, while the most recent has been right-hander Yennier Cano, a native of Ciego de Ávila. Other Cubans who have played for Baltimore this century include Cionel Pérez, Yusniel Díaz, José Iglesias, Néstor Cortés Jr, Dariel Álvarez, Odrisamer Despaigne, Henry Urrutia, Danys Báez, Alberto Castillo, Rafael Palmeiro and Eli Marrero.
