When it comes to judging who the best hitter in the game today is, Juan Soto and Yordan Álvarez are always in the conversation for this distinction. Earlier this month I made a comparison on their numbers in the regular which had Álvarez came out on top as the better pure hitter.
Today I am going to compare their numbers in the postseason. Both players have a vast amount of experience in the playoffs and have also been very successful over that span. Below I’m going to analyze their trajectories in the postseason and give a verdict on who is the better hitter, especially during the high pressure situations of the playoffs.
Based on the playoff numbers shown in the graphic below, Yordan Álvarez has been the better postseason performer overall.
What Stands Out:
Álvarez leads every major offensive category listed in the comparison. Despite playing more games, he has maintained superior rate statistics. In the postseason Álvarez owns a higher batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and OPS . His power production has also been greater. The power-hitting Cuban has more home runs (12 vs. 11), doubles (13 vs. 8) and RBIs (41 vs. 30)
Big-Game Factor:
One thing that further strengthens Álvarez’s case is that he owns the 2021 American League Championship Series MVP Award, recognizing his impact in one of the biggest playoff series of his career.
Verdict:
If we’re judging strictly from the numbers presented. Yordan Álvarez has been the superior playoff hitter. He leads Juan Soto in every offensive category shown while maintaining elite efficiency and producing one of the best postseason OPS marks among active players (.944). Soto has been excellent in October, but the numbers in your graphic favor Álvarez across the board.
